Before coming to the Bar, Pat spent 23 years in the Civil Service handling all manner of Social Security matters before moving into HM Revenue and Customs where he was a National Insurance inspector, a PAYE compliance officer and finished his time there as a Tax Credit fraud investigator.

Following that Pat spent 13 years with West Mercia police as a Financial Investigator. There he was responsible for investigating the finances of serious organised criminals identifying over £16 million worth of criminal benefit and securing orders for the payment of over £4.3 million in realisable assets.

With West Mercia police Pat was awarded four commendations one of which, a Chief Constable’s commendation, was the highest award a civilian could receive.

Pat completed his pupillage with 3 Temple Gardens in London but chose to return to the Midlands in order to be nearer home.

In his first crown court defence trial (a 3 handed affray), and whilst in his third six pupillage, Pat was so convincing in his closing speech that, despite the weight of evidence, the jury was unable to reach a verdict. In his second crown court defence trial, and again whilst still in his third six pupillage, Pat secured the acquittal of a man indicted for racially aggravated public order.

Since joining our Chambers Pat has developed extensive experience in Crown court namely appeals against conviction and appeals against sentences, committal for sentences, and bail applications for both Prosecution and Defence. He successfully represented a client accused of Aggravated burglary, S.18 Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent and Robbery. He regularly appears in the Magistrate Courts for both Prosecution and Defence. He is an experienced and well liked advocate in all driving related matters including death by dangerous driving, drink and drug related driving offences. He has successfully defended clients in benefit fraud, public disorder, theft and has a particular interest in POCA hearings.
